About Us

"The United Methodist Church was formed when the EUB Church and the Methodist Church merged in 1968. However, our heritage traces back much farther than that.

  The early beginnings of Methodism date back to 1736 when John and Charles Wesley came to the New World to spread the movement they began as students in England. 

Our church is now global with more than 12 million members around the world. While our languages, cultures and nations of origin may differ, a common mission and history unite us in powerful ways."   - umc.org

  Grace UMC's history goes back to 1861 with the origins of the Evangelical Church in St. Cloud, MN. Our mission began with services held in a home just outside of St. Cloud. We moved into the city in 1873 and, by 1888, were meeting in our first building known as the First Evangelical Church (a one-room wooden structure). 

As our membership increased, so grew the need for a new building that could offer a modern church program. In 1928, the Minnesota Annual Conference granted permission to build a new church, where we stayed for nearly seven decades.

In 1946, the General Conference voted to merge the Evangelical and United Brethren denominations. So, in 1952, we became the First EUB Church; then two years later, were renamed Grace EUB Church. When the EUB Church merged with the Methodist Church in 1968, we became Grace United Methodist Church. 

As we came into a new millennium, our congregation realized our old building was no longer able to meet the needs of its community. The congregation voted to purchase land and build a new church in southern St. Cloud, our current location, where we have served for the last twenty years.
